Score breakdown
Why this grade
GoPro action cameras are glued and sealed for waterproofing and are effectively not designed to be repaired. iFixit's Hero 9/10 disassembly guide states outright the cameras 'were not made to be disassembled,' that you must 'cut into the back,' and that the camera 'may not be waterproof after reassembly'; some models (e.g., Hero4 Session) have non-user-replaceable batteries. There is no official parts program or service manual; GoPro steers customers to replacement/trade-up rather than repair. iFixit sells a limited set of parts, but destructive entry and zero official documentation dominate the score.
Methodology & version
Five dimensions — parts availability, schematic access, repairability, OEM pricing, and software freedom — are scored 0–100 and weighted equally; the letter grade is the average (A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60). This assessment is current as of 6/9/2026 and cites its sources below. It covers the Cameras category and is not a claim about every device the maker ships.
