Score breakdown

Parts Availability 80
Schematic Access 40
Repairability 68
OEM Pricing 66
Software Freedom 60

Why this grade

The PIRG/iFixit/Repair.org FTC investigation (50 makers, 37 technicians) named LG as one of the two WORST offenders at restricting service documentation to independent technicians, which drives the very low schematic score. Parts availability is genuinely good (LG publishes an accessible online parts catalog, per the French index ecosystem) and physical design is decent, but a well-documented linear-compressor failure pattern on French-door refrigerators and integrated/smart designs hurt real-world repair friendliness. Smart models add software-gated diagnostics.

Methodology & version

Five dimensions — parts availability, schematic access, repairability, OEM pricing, and software freedom — are scored 0–100 and weighted equally; the letter grade is the average (A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60). This assessment is current as of 6/9/2026 and cites its sources below. It covers the Large appliances category and is not a claim about every device the maker ships.
