A discharge too small to feel can still weaken or destroy sensitive components.

Technical detail

Electrostatic discharge occurs when objects at different electrical potentials equalize, producing a pulse that can damage semiconductor junctions.

Examples

  • Touching a logic board after walking on carpet can discharge static into an integrated circuit.
