Reflow soldering

repair

Also called: reflow

Plain-language definition

Plain-language definition

A process that melts solder paste to attach surface-mounted parts.

Why it matters

Controlled reflow is different from indiscriminately heating a failed board, which can hide faults or cause new damage.

Technical detail

Reflow soldering heats an assembly through controlled temperature stages so solder paste wets component leads and board pads before cooling into joints.

Examples

  • A hot-air station can reflow a properly prepared replacement surface-mount connector.
