It can satisfy authentication requirements or reduce fraud exposure, but a challenge can also interrupt checkout.
Technical detail
3-D Secure is a card-network authentication protocol that exchanges transaction and risk data and may present an issuer challenge before authorization continues.

- The customer approves a card payment in their bank’s authentication screen.
